North Intermodal Yard Pavement, Railroad, and Drainage Repairs

This project was for pavement and drainage repairs in the North Intermodal Yard at the Port of Tacoma. This area consists of large paved areas which provide access to double-stack railcars for the loading and unloading of 20, 40 and 44 foot shipping containers. The North Intermodal Yard has eight sets of railtracks, each about 4,000 feet long; over the past 14 years the railtracks have settled 2 to 4 inches, resulting in uneven paved surfaces which posed operational problems for movement of the loaded shipping containers with the 90 ton capacity straddle carriers. This project reconstructed about 4,000 linear feet of rail track in the central portion of the yard.

The paved surfaces in the North Intermodal Yard were originally constructed with 14-inch thick Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC); these pavements have experienced numerous failures over the past fifteen years, with particular distress in the straddle carrier crossing areas. This project reconstructed four straddle carrier crossings with a concrete encased railtrack section and removed deteriorated RCC pavements in the crossing areas and constructed new Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. These repairs provided a level surface in the crossing areas to improve operational safety.

This work included extensive field investigation and mapping of pavement defects for development of budget estimates for follow-on pavement repair projects.

Key Project Features:

  • Removed failed RCC sections and constructed Reinforced Portland Cement Concrete Sections
  • Developed repair plan for future work including asphalt repairs, PCC repairs and storm drainage improvements
  • Raised 4000 lf of railtrack to design grade
  • Constructed Concrete Encased Rail track sections at Straddle Carrier Crossings
  • Conducted field investigation, Prepared CAD Drawings, Specifications, Cost Estimates and Performed Construction Support Services
