Renovation of Holly Road
Kitsap County, Washington

Holly Road NW is a rural major collector which connects the county's Wildcat Lake Park and Seabeck Highway NW. Traffic on the road had increased significantly due to increased use of the park, ongoing commercial development in the vicinity of the park entrance, and a substantial residential development along the rest of the corridor.

The project considered analysis and designing horizontal and vertical curve alignment, widening and resurfacing approximately five miles of Holly Road NW. The design also corrected sight-distance deficiencies caused by vertical and horizontal curves. The improvements increased lane widths, provided widened paved shoulders for bicycle and pedestrian traffic, and added left turn channelization into the County Park and other locations to alleviate potential accidents. The project included basic illumination beginning at the westerly entrance of the park and ending at the most easterly entrance.

Washington Engineering personnel provided preliminary, intermediate, and final designs that included construction drawings in AutoCAD format, specifications, and cost estimates.

Design features of this project included:

  • Investigation of existing soils conditions and identification of pavement design sections.
  • Evaluation of major congestion areas for warrants for channelization and basic illumination
  • Identification of right-of-way and slope easement requirements.
  • Drainage system design in accordance with the Kitsap County Drainage Ordinance.
  • Coordination of utilities extensions/ relocations.

Key Project Features:

  • Design to WSDOT and AASHTO Standards
  • Major Rural Collector Road Design
  • Asphalt Pavement Design
  • Intersection Design
