Indefinite Delivery A-E Services for Military Projects
McChord Air Force Base, Washington

This job summary sheet describes civil engineering type projects which have been assigned under an indefinite delivery, multi-disciplinary A-E Services contract for McChord AFB.

Oil/Water Separators at Jet Fuel Farms - This Delivery Order designs spill containment features around two existing jet fuel areas. Work includes the addition of curbing to contain spills and construction of a concrete vault type oil/water separator at each site. Since the jet fuel may contain de-icing agents, the effluent from the separators cannot be discharged directly to surface waters. The project includes connections to the sanitary sewer system at each site. Work at the POL site near Building 1l58 includes design of a lift station and force main since there is insufficient elevation to permit installation of a gravity flow system.

Key Project Features:

  • Storm Drainage/Oil-Water Separators
  • Runaway Pavement Repairs
  • Above Ground Fuel Storage Tanks
  • Removal of Underground Storage Tanks

Ground Fuel Issue Systems - This Delivery Order provides for the removal of two 25,000 gallon single wall underground storage tanks and associated underground piping and pumping equipment near Building 745; site remediation/improvements is included as part of the design. These existing systems are replaced with two 12,00) gallon, double walled above ground fuel tanks at a site near Building 1158, One of the new fuel tanks is for diesel fuel and the other is Ivor unleaded gasoline. The new tanks are located on a concrete slab and covered with a structural steel framed shelter, Each tank includes two 300 gpm fuel issue and receiving pumps. Underground fuel issue and receiving piping will be double-walled fiberglass and will include appropriate leak detection monitoring capability. The project is located in an existing POL storage area near Building 1158; work includes relocation/extension of utilities to the site and constriction of an asphalt access road.

Runway Repairs - This Delivery Order performs an inspection of the 150 foot wide by 11,000 foot long primary runway and shoulders at McChord AFB. Based on the inspection work, construction documents are being prepared to repair both the asphaltic concrete (AC) and portland cement concrete (PCC) portions of the runway.

Repairs to the AC portion of the runway include:

  • Sealing/resealing all cracks
  • Grinding/replacement of deteriorated pavement along construction joints & Shoulder repair
  • Restriping any damaged pavement markings

Repairs to the PCC portion include:

  • Resealing joints and repair of joint spalling
  • Scaling/Resealing of random working cracks
  • Removal and replacement of damaged slabs & Restriping

In the performance of this work, close coordination was required with Operations personnel during the inspection phase as the runway was maintained in an active condition.

Erosion Control at 13 sites on Clover Creek and Morey Pond - This Delivery Order designs waterfront pedestrian access at designated locations. All of the locations art at points where bank/slope erosion was started from and is continuing from recreational usage. The primary purpose is to provide a structural steel access stair for fishing along the creek. Permanent steel/concrete structures will be installed; where feasible, construction for handicapped access is included. The project includes evaluation of permitting requirements. Topsoil and seeding will be accomplished to restore areas damaged by construction.
