Repair Lean-to, Aircraft Hangars 1 and 2
McChord Air Force Base, Washington

This project was for the upgrade of the maintenance lean-to areas of Hangars 1 and 2 at McChord AFB. Work in Hangar 1 included upgrading existing rooms into a Long Distance Learning Center with High Tech Maintenance Classrooms for maintenance personnel. Work in Hangar 2 included upgrading of shops and administrative areas for maintenance personnel.

Renovated shops include the Hydraulic Machine Shop, Structural Maintenance Shop, Corrosion Control Shop, Aircraft Tire Shop, Paint Booth, and A/R Hydraulics Shop. Renovated areas also included breakrooms, bench stock areas, tool rooms, general storage rooms, locker rooms, vestibules, and office space. Work on both Hangars included upgrade of HVAC, Electrical, Communication, and Fire Control systems, and renovation of all interior finishes.

Specific project features included:

  • Installation of utility sinks, emergency showers, eyewash facilities, and drains in shop areas.
  • Removal and replacement of doors and associated hardware. Interior doors were replaced with sound deadening doors. Weatherstripping was replaced on exterior doors.
  • Complete renovation of men's and women's toilet facilities including removal and replacement of plumbing fixtures and piping, addition of handicapped stalls, new wall, floor, and ceiling finishes, and replacement of lighting and ventilation systems.
  • Replacement of existing HVAC system and expansion of the existing EMCS system. HVAC systems included four pipe fan coil units, packaged chiller unit, VAV ventilation air handling unit, chilled and hot water hydronic systems, distribution ductwork, roof top air conditioning unit, and additional sensors and controls.
  • Fire alarm system including automatic detection, audible and visual evacuation alarm, and regular and emergency power supplies.
  • Installation of Local Area Network (LAN) wiring in raceway in refurbished areas.
  • Addition of exterior ramps, railings, and non-slip surfaces to comply with the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Structural design for addition of entry canopies at all entrances and miscellaneous support for openings in lean-to exterior and interior walls.
  • Civil site work for extension of existing utilities.
  • Addition of new windows and replacement of existing windows with energy efficient aluminum thermal break frames.
  • Selection and coordination of interior finishes throughout for new and renovated spaces including walls, suspended acoustical ceilings, various floor finishes such as nod-skid industrial surfaces in shops and carpeting in administrative areas, and paint. Interior finishes were matched to existing adjacent surfaces when appropriate.
  • Exterior landscaping plan including removal of existing vegetation, plant schedule, and installation of automatic sprinkler system and controls.
  • Asbestos and lead base paint inspection for renovated areas including exterior duct insulation, heating pipes, and vinyl floor tiles.
  • Upgrade of electrical system to support receptacles for computers, new recessed ceiling lights, exterior lights, and shop equipment.
